Generally, one sidebar is used for the main navigation menu, one for quick-links or ads and the main center section is used for the actual page content. The sidebars can be fixed on the page and always visible, or scroll with the rest of the page content. On mobile screens the three columns will collapse into a single column to better fit the narrow screen widths of phones.
